AHA-sponsored Research on ACO-like Organizations
The development of integrated healthcare delivery systems - organizations
capable of
- managing the health of a given population
- simultaneously improving the quality of care and patient satisfaction,
while lowering the cost of care
- performing well under value-based reimbursement
is a hot topic for health care leaders.
In health reform legislation, these types of health care delivery systems are
referred to as Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). In other settings (such as
value-based reimbursement agreements with commercial payers, they may go by other names.
McManis Consulting has recently completed case study research, sponsored by the
American Hospital Association, of health delivery systems that are in transition to
become ACO-like organizations. Products from this research include two white papers
and four case studies.

Volume to Value: The Transition to Accountable Care Organizations
This white paper focuses on the strategic considerations, success factors and the
transition process in developing an ACO or similar organization. It describes the
key elements of the transition, including
- Leadership
- Uses and possible sources of funds
- Incentives
- Pilot projects (as market entry strategies)
- Information flows and technology
- Care management strategies

The Work Ahead: Activities and Costs to Develop an Accountable Care Organization
What is an ACO? It is basically a step in the direction of an integrated
health care delivery system. For most organizations, substantial work is
ahead creating a workable integrated delivery system.
This second white paper provides a more detailed discussion of 23 activities that
McManis staff have identified as being important in the process of developing a
workable, sustainable ACO. Two prototype ACOs are described, and costs are
estimated for the 23 activities.

The two white papers are based primarily on four case studies of different types of
health care provider organizations, operating under different market conditions:
